The staff at the Sparta High School, in partnership with parents and the community, is committed to providing every student with the opportunity to obtain an excellent education that will prepare them for the post-secondary career pathway of their choosing. We offer a comprehensive curriculum that challenges students in all disciplines and afford them innumerable opportunities to learn and grow within a positive educational climate that promotes academic success and reinforces respect for oneself and others.
As a school we have made many curricular changes over the past several years to better meet the needs of all of our students. These changes have enhanced the rigor of our curriculum, as well as, allow us to better meet the needs of our at-risk and specials needs students.
Students planning on attending a four-year college/university have numerous challenging course options to choose from. We offer AP courses in each of the core areas, honors courses, five years of Spanish and German, plus many other upper level courses in both the core and non-core areas. Students also have the opportunity to take "Youth Options" courses at several local universities and courses offered at other high schools via our distance learning lab.
Sparta High School also has a comprehensive offering of our courses for students preparing for a career in a vocational/technical field in the areas of agriculture, technical education, family and consumer education, business and marketing, art, and computer programming/maintenance. Many of these courses offer off-campus Coop learning/work opportunities, and are articulated with the technical colleges, allowing students to earn both high school and college credit for the same course.
Many of the skills and habits students acquire while attending high school are learned outside of the classroom by participating in extra curricular and athletic activities. Sparta high school offers a rich selection of opportunities in both areas. We offer eighteen different varsity sports plus many junior varsity sports and freshmen sports. Our sports teams work closely with our community recreation program in providing year round healthy and athletic alternatives for our students. We also offer opportunities for students to get involved in many extracurricular activities such as Forensics, One-Act Play, Musical, Madrigal, DECA, FFA, FBLA, FCCLA, Art Club, Chess Club, Dance Team, Jazz Band, Mock Trial, Show Choir, Student Council, and Renaissance to name a few. All of these out of classroom activities provide opportunities for students to develop leadership skills, communication skills, and skills needed to work as a member of a team.
